Between rock and freedom – climbing in the Zugspitz Arena

The Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena is home to one of the most divers climbing areas in the Alps. The region surrounding the Zugspitz Resort appeals to climbers, families and alpine explorers alike. From your first hold in the climbing garden to challenging alpine routes, there are countless opportunities to push yourself to new heights. More than 150 sport climbing routes, multi-pitch routes and via ferratas make the Zugspitze a hotspot for lovers of high altitudes. Highlights include the Coburger Steig (D/E), the Tajakante (E) and the Seeben via ferrata (D/E) with spectacular views down into the valley and an alpine character. The classic “Stopselzieher” (A/B) leads directly to Germany’s highest peak. To ensure a safe via ferrata experience, routes should match your own abilities, a partner check should be carried out before setting off, sufficient distance should be maintained, and the weather forecast should be heeded. If there is a risk of thunderstorms, it is better to skip the route.

Growing together – family adventures & canyoning

You don’t need experience to tackle every height – sometimes curiosity is enough. In the climbing areas around Ehrwald, Lermoos and Bichlbach, families can discover mountain sports in a fun and safe way. Whether it’s Plattspitzen West, Ehrwalder Platte or Griesener Wandl: here, those first holds lead to first successes. Children surpass themselves, parents are amazed – and together they create memories that last a lifetime. The nature experience becomes even more intense with canyoning in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. At the Lermoos Alpine School, experienced guides lead the way through wild gorges, past waterfalls, smooth rocks and turquoise water. Abseiling, sliding, jumping – here, the power of nature becomes palpable. Those who wish to train regardless of the weather will find ideal conditions for technique, safety and their first climbing experiences at the EhrWALLd climbing hall.

When canyoning, guides, good swimming skills, suitable protective equipment and careful weather planning ensure a safe adventure. Even light rainfall can significantly alter conditions in a gorge.

Beyond the Moment – Highlights of the Region

For those who want to venture even further afield, the region offers some true classics of alpine adventure. The Jubiläumsgrat ridge between the Zugspitze and the Alpspitze is considered one of the most impressive ridge crossings in the Alps – long, challenging and spectacular all at once. Another highlight is the Highline 179 near Reutte, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, which uniquely combines thrills with panoramic views. Guided tours and climbing courses with experienced mountain guides ensure that your first steps on the rock turn into genuine alpine confidence. Even without your own kit, nothing stands in the way of adventure: climbing equipment can be easily hired in the region – from the Ehrwald climbing hall and Bergsport Total to the Bichlbach climbing forest.

And so, every day of an active holiday around the Zugspitz Resort becomes an invitation: to go out, think higher and feel further. Between rock, water and sky, something emerges that cannot be booked – only experienced.
