From your first jump to the snow park: freestyle for beginners

Glide over a wave, have a go at a small jump and, ideally, do it all over again straight away: freestyle adds variety to your day’s skiing. You don’t need spectacular tricks to do this, just solid skiing technique and a curiosity to try something new.

First the basics, then freestyle

Before you tackle your first moguls or try out jumps, you need to have the basics down: skiing confidently through turns, braking in a controlled manner and gauging your own speed. Anyone who can ski confidently on the piste has a good foundation for freestyle skiing. It’s not about jumping as high as possible, but about exploring your own abilities and discovering new moves.

Start in open, uncluttered areas with simple terrain features. Ski over small moguls, get to know the run and feel how the surface changes. You don’t need to jump – simply skiing over a mogul in a controlled manner helps you develop a feel for the terrain. A ski course helps you improve your technique and gain confidence for your first attempts at freestyle.

Small steps, big successes

Your first jump doesn’t have to be spectacular. The important thing is that you feel confident and assess the situation properly. Get a good overview of the run, the approach and the landing area, and let others inspire you without putting yourself under pressure. In the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena, beginners and experienced freestylers alike will find a wide variety of options on skis or a snowboard. The Family Park on the Ehrwalder Alm offers a gentle introduction with simple boxes and jumps, suitable even for children. Those with more experience will find further challenges in the snow park along the Klämmli run.

Even away from traditional snowparks, playful attractions provide plenty of variety: the Ehrwalder Alm’s Funslope delights with waves, a speed boost and features centred around Dohle Didi. The Schneeschnecke offers fun for young and old alike, whilst Bibers Buzzebahn in Biberwier entices visitors with bends and amusing figures. On the Skimovie run at the Plattensteig lift in Lermoos, you can film your run and relive it later.

Those looking for even more variety will discover further playful challenges for different skill levels whilst enjoying family skiing with the snow park and funslopes. With information on the Ehrwalder Almbahn and the ski area, you can plan your next day’s skiing entirely according to your own preferences.

Staying safe on the slopes: this is all part of the snow park experience

Whatever your level of success, safety always comes first. A well-fitting helmet, suitable kit and a back protector provide protection. Assess your ability realistically, choose suitable obstacles and get a clear overview of the run before setting off. Be mindful of other skiers, keep landing areas clear, only set off when the run is clear, and observe local rules. Especially when you’re just starting out, experienced companions or a ski instructor can help you improve your technique and master new challenges step by step.

Whether it’s your first wave or a small jump: new experiences on two boards make for an unforgettable day’s skiing. More winter adventures await at the Zugspitz Resort in Ehrwald. Discover the holiday offers and packages for your next break in the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena.
