Of Star-Moneys and Dreams of Summits: Exploring the Zugspitze with Children
From a dream that touched the heavens 100 years ago to the little hands of children marvelling at a mountain peak for the very first time today: the Zugspitze tells stories that bring generations together.
In the footsteps of the sky-scaler
To mark the 100th anniversary of the Tyrolean Zugspitze Railway, the play “Sterntaler für die Zugspitze – Die Geburt der Himmelsstürmerin” tells the story of Dr Hermann Stern, whose vision became a reality a century ago. A story of courage, pioneering spirit and the dream of opening up the fascinating world of the Zugspitze to people. Author Claudia Lang-Forcher weaves together historical events with personal stories and recounts the power of an idea that has inspired generations. Performances will take place this summer on selected dates in July and August at the Zugspitzsaal in Ehrwald.
Today, it is the little ‘sky-scalers’ who are writing their own stories on the mountain. With children’s eyes full of curiosity, shared experiences and little moments of triumph that will be remembered for a long time to come.
Little sky-scalers on a grand journey of discovery
The Zugspitze isn’t just a peak for experienced mountaineers – young adventurers are also very welcome. The adventure begins right at the valley station: a large adventure playground with a go-kart track and trampoline is sure to make children’s eyes light up before they head up to the heights on the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn cable car. The journey itself is an experience in its own right, offering young explorers breathtaking views of the mountain landscape. At the top, the summit platform and fascinating museum exhibits await, whilst in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, numerous family-friendly trails and nature experiences around the mountain invite you to enjoy relaxed discovery tours.
To ensure the trip up to the heights remains a relaxing experience for the whole family, plenty of fluids, short breaks and sun protection are essential. After all, in just a few minutes you’ll reach almost 3,000 metres above sea level – an altitude difference that younger guests need time to get used to. During the cable car ride, drinking, chewing or sucking on something can help if the change in altitude causes discomfort in the ears. This turns a day’s holiday in the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena into a family adventure filled with wide-eyed wonder, first summit photos and special moments that will linger long after the holiday is over.
Adventures that bring people together
Not every summit climb has to be a test of physical prowess. It is often the little moments that make a day in the mountains unforgettable: an edelweiss by the side of the path, the first patch of snow in summer, a picnic together with a view of the peaks, or the moment when children gaze in wonder at the vastness of the mountain world for the very first time. It is precisely these experiences that remain as cherished family memories.
